Let's Get Loud!

SWMPQIC funding, and all funding for the Michigan RPQCs, is in danger of being cut out of the state budget. Plain and simple... if it does, there will be no funds flowing to and through SWMPQIC, to fund the amazing work that our partners, families, and communities are doing to improve maternal and infant health outcomes throughout Southwest Michigan. If you feel this work should continue, please consider adding your signature to a letter that will be sent to State Senators and Representatives.

The Honorable [Legislator's Name]
Michigan House of Representatives / Michigan Senate
[Address]

Dear [Senator/Representative] [Last Name],

I am writing to urge your support for continued funding of Regional Perinatal Quality Collaboratives (PQCs) in the Michigan FY 2027 state budget, including the Region 8 Perinatal Quality Collaborative, also known as the Southwest Michigan Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative (SWMPQIC), serving families in Southwest Michigan.

SWMPQIC/Region 8 PQC brings together hospitals, healthcare providers, public health professionals, families, and community organizations to improve maternal and infant health outcomes through evidence-based quality improvement initiatives. This work helps ensure that families across Southwest Michigan receive safe, high-quality, and equitable perinatal care.

The PQCs fill a unique role that complements—rather than duplicates—other Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) maternal and infant health programs. PQCs focus on hospital- and provider-level quality improvement, translating statewide priorities into measurable changes in local communities.

FY25 & FY26 PQC funding has supported important initiatives in Southwest Michigan, including:

  • A quality improvement project at Bronson Hospital using remote blood pressure monitoring to improve the management of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and postpartum.

  • An Indigenous doula training that honored and elevated cultural practices.

  • Small grants for community organizations, including preterm birth stabilization kits and emergency department training for rural hospitals without labor and delivery units.

  • Professional education, training, and resources focused on perinatal mental health.

Continued investment in Regional PQCs is also fiscally responsible. By reducing preventable complications and improving outcomes for mothers and infants, these collaboratives help lower healthcare costs and strengthen Michigan's maternal and infant health system.

As you consider priorities for the FY 2027 budget, I respectfully ask that you support full funding for Regional Perinatal Quality Collaboratives. This investment demonstrates Michigan's commitment to healthier pregnancies, safer births, and stronger communities.

Thank you for your leadership and dedication to Michigan families. I welcome the opportunity to provide additional information about the impact of SWMPQIC/Region 8 PQC.

Sincerely,

Southwest Michigan Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative
